What is Lite-Up Texas?

The Lite-up Texas program was available to families that have a low household income. It was put in place to give assistance in paying the electricity bill of those who are eligible. The program is currently scheduled to provided a government subsidy through August of 2016. To get the benefit, you need to complete the Lite-Up Texas Application for 2015 which is provided by the Texas Public Utilities Commission. Once your application is approved by the Texas Low Income Discount Administrator, your electricity provider will be notified and your bill will be reduced by the amount of the subsidy.

Am I Qualified to receive a Lite-up Texas Benefit?

You are qualified for discount if you currently participate in one of these government assistance programs:

• Medicaid
• Food Stamps (or SNAP)

For those that are not yet receiving benefits from either of these two programs, there is an income based qualification. If your household's total income does not exceed 125% of the poverty level as defined by the federal government, you should apply today.
If you aren't receiving Medicaid or Food Stamps benefits but believe that you are qualified because of your income, you may enroll by calling Lite-up Texas at 1-866-454-8387 to request that an application be sent to you. Or, you can print an application here.
To receive the Lite-Up Texas benefit, you must live in a deregulated area of Texas where have the power to choose your own Retail Electric Provider (REP).

What does Lite-Up Texas give me?

The Lite-Up Texas program reduces your electricity rate by 15% during the months of May, June, July, and August. This program will save you 15% off your electric charge! It can also give you a discount on your home phone service. Even if you don't qualify for the electricity discount, you may still qualify for the subsidy on your phone bill. Participation in programs such as CHIP and the National Free School Lunch Program and others qualifies you for the telephone discount. The income qualification for the phone subsidy is set at 150% of the poverty level.
